Install Google Chrome Web Browser on a Windows 2008 Terminal Server for All Users

comment icon14 comment(s) |

Overview

In case you didn't know, if you install Google Chrome by downloading and installing from http://www.google.com/chrome, Chrome will install itself to the AppData folder for ONLY the user that installed the folder. The install directory is located at:

  • For Windows Vista/Windows 7 - C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\
  • For Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\

For Window's Server 2003 if an individual user wants Google Chrome, they can simply go to http://www.google.com/chrome and install Chrome. However, that option no longer works for Window's Server 2008 without prompting for an administrator password (at least that's the case with the multiple terminal servers that I've tried).

So let's say you want to install Google Chrome on a terminal server for every user so you no longer have to worry about prompting for an administrator password. How would you go about this? In older versions of Google Chrome and in Windows Server 2003, you could copy and app data folder from the user and dump it in the all users folder and create a shortcut to the executable file. However, this no longer works in Windows Server 2008 nor does it work with the newer versions of Google Chrome and Windows Server 2003.

Fortunately, there is a way to install Google Chrome on a server, both 2003 and 2008 for all users. In the past, Google used to allow you to use Google Pack from http://pack.google.com, however this Google Pack was discontinued in October 2011. Instead, Google created a ‘alternative’ installer located at http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=126299 which will install for all users on the computer.

Step by Step Instructions for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008:

  1. Log on as an administrator
  2. Uninstall any previous versions of Google Chrome Web Browser for the administrator account you logged on to
  3. Go to http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=126299
  4. Select “Alternate Installer for All User Accounts >>”
  5. Install the program by saving then running or simply running the .exe (Note: Although Chrome will work for all users by running the .exe, you should install programs via the "Install Application on Remote Desktop" in Control Panel on a 2008 machine)
  6. Done! The program should initiate on its own and be installed for every user.

Archived Instructions as of Oct. 2011:

Windows Server 2008

  1. Log on as an administrator
  2. Uninstall any previous versions of Google Chrome Web Browser
  3. Go to http://pack.google.com
  4. Select Google Chrome Web Browser
  5. Install (folder will be placed in Program Files) and a shortcut should be placed on the desktop for every user.

Windows Server 2003

As of July 2011, users could use the 'Alternative Google Pack' with the same instructions as the Windows Server 2008 to install Chrome for all users.

Before Google Pack, a few known methods of bypassing the install existed which stopped working in April of 2011:

  1. Copy and pasting Administrator Local Settings\Application Data\Google folder to the same location for All Users profile or the any %username% account and opening up the Google.exe file from either location to the specific user.
  2. Copying a shortcut from the Google.exe from a working account (Administrator or non-administrator) to the All Users\Desktop and/or %username%\Desktop folder.
  3. Copying and pasting a working copy of Program File\Google from Windows Server 2008 to Program Files\Google for Windows Server 2003 and creating a shortcut to Google.exe.

Win 2K3 not compatible with the pack

I do not know about Windows 2008, but Google pack is not compatible with windows 2003

As of April 20th, Google Pack

As of April 20th, Google Pack installs with Windows Server 2008.

All previous ways of bypassing the Google Chrome for Windows Server 2003 that I've read about/attempted no longer work with the newest version of Chrome web browser.

Tried it and it worked

Could not install into Programs

I had chrome installed, I did uninstall it and then followed the directions above, it re-installed into \%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome anyway, and not into the programs for all users...
FYI

Try uninstalling and reinstalling again.

I ran into the same issue when I did this install the very first time, however I've done this multiple times on Windows 2008 Servers and I've had other employees verify this install multiple times as well, and we haven't had issues since. I can only guess one of the following occurred:
1. You don't have administrative rights on the server you installed to.
2. You installed Google Chrome again without installing Google Pack.
3. Google Chrome didn't fully uninstall then when you tried to install Google Pack it reinstalled incorrectly.
4. You didn't do this install on Windows Server 2008.

You need to make sure that GOOGLE CHROME WEB BROWSER displays in the list of software on the http://pack.google.com/ or it will not install correctly.

I haven't verified this, but here is a possible alternative fix: try to log on to the server with another account that has administrative rights that does not have Google Chrome installed. Install Google Pack with the alternative administrative account and this will hopefully solve your issue.

it works on Windows Server 2003 now

Google has it working now on Win2003. When you go to pack.google.com click on the "Try New Version" and it works on Windows Server 2003 now. The full URL is http://pack.google.com/?version=3

Thanks for the post Peter!

Thanks for the post Peter! I'll be sure to take a look at this in the near future!

Hmm

Great walkthrough.

I've successfully installed google chrome on our server 2008r2 server. However the application keeps prompting the users to reselect their default search provider and doesnt keep their search history or favorites. Has anyone else encountered this and/or got round this issue?

Thanks in Advance

Rob

Hey Rob. I'm glad you found

Hey Rob. I'm glad you found this article helpful. Do you have a group policy deleting the user profile from the server once they log off? Do users have to recreate their profile on your server everytime they log on? You might try checking C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data to see if the user's Chrome data is even getting saved on the server. Do you have FF or have you tried to see if people using IE are experiencing the same issues?

You might try logging in as the domain administrator to see if its saving to that user is saving as well.

Google Pack No Longer Available

From the Google Pack site:

Update on Google Pack
Google Pack was introduced in 2005 to make it easy to download and install a package of Google and third-party applications that helped users get the most out of their computers. Google Pack was responsible for fueling 100s of millions of software downloads. A lot has changed in the last six years. Virtually all new applications and services are now on the web. With declining interest in downloadable software, the time has come to discontinue Google Pack, but you’ll still be able to quickly access our partners’ software through the direct links below.
