Excel 2007: "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

comment icon567 comment(s) |

If you have ever tried to open an excel document and received the error that says "There was a problem sending the command to the program", you can fix it by doing the following:

  1. Open Excel 2007
  2. Open the Menu in the top left
  3. Click the "Excel Options" button

  4. Click the advanced tab on the left of the options screen
  5. Under the general options uncheck the box "Ignore other application that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)"

March 27, 2010

Still a problem

One thing to check is which add-ins are installed. If there are any, you may want to try and disable them just to see if the problem goes away.

If it does end up making the problem go away, you can try and re-enable them one by one till you find the one that causes the problem.

Error message sending file to excel

The other problem could be that you've set up excel to open as an administrator each time. This creates the same error message. Right click on the shortcut and then click on properties. Click the 'Compatability' tab and then click on the 'Change settings on all users'. Untick "Run the program as an administrator". That should do the job if nothing else will.

Is there a way to get past that error without unchecking the DDE option? I have a dual monitor setup and often have as many as 6 excel files open and viewable at a time. As far as I know, the only way to keep them in separate windows in Excel 2007 is to keep that DDE option checked.

QuickBooks caused it!

Like you, my Excel launch error messages began the day I installed QuickBooks 2014 (an upgrade from QB 2013). However, the solution in this article did not fix my problem. That box was already un-checked. Do you know how to find a fix from the QB folks Intuit?

Oddly, my files open fine if I right-click and choose Open With --> Excel. But just double-clicking the file causes the "There was a problem..." error message. I am an IT pro, and I am certain the default program for the file is MS Excel. I also tried other fixes suggested in various on-line forums, but none have worked. I figure Intuit should know what damage they caused and what the correct fix is. I just can't find it.

I am using Office 365 Small Business Premium (essentially Office 2013 Pro) on a Windows 7 platform.

Hello, I know this is an old

Hello,
I know this is an old post, but hopefully i will get some help. I have windows 7 and using office 2003 on it. I get this error when i try to open an excel attachment from outlook. I unchecked the option "ignore other applications" under tools->options-> general tab. I also tried clearing out the outlook's "OutlookSecureTempFolder" which was suggested on some other forum. But none of these options seem to work for me.
I can save the file and then double click to open it successfully. or if I have any other excel document open and then I open the attachment directly from outlook, it opens successfully. I would really appreciate it if some one could provide me with some feed back. Thanks in advance.

Another fix

For those who have NOT been able to resolve the issue via this suggested fix like me, try this (it worked for me):

Go to Computer - C drive - and check if there are TWO (2) program files; in my case I had Program Files and Program Files (x86). If so...

Delete Microsoft Office from BOTH program files and uninstall it from 'Uninstal Programs'
Reinstall Microsoft Office, being sure to specify "Program Files" as the installation directory

Voila!

There was a problem sending the command to the program

When I checked the Excel Options, General, check box to ignore other applications that use DDE, the box was unchecked. I then followed the suggestion of how someone else in this thread fixed their problem. I then rebooted my pc and went back to excel to open a file and am still getting the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program".
Do you have any further suggestions on how to fix this or is living with it my only option?

November 5, 2011

ashum

There was a problem sending the command to the program

I got the same problem a few weeks ago and tried to uncheck ignore other applications that use DDE but did not work for me.
From the excel shortcut icon on desktop, I right mouse click and open up the properties tab, under shortcut tab -> advanced (I am using Windows 7 and Excel 2010), you should find a checkbox run as administrator. Uncheck this and my problem is solved. But remember you can find this shortcut tab from the shortcut to the excel application only, not in any other shortcut that link to any specific excel documents. Let me know if that works.
