Excel 2007: "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

If you have ever tried to open an excel document and received the error that says "There was a problem sending the command to the program", you can fix it by doing the following:

  1. Open Excel 2007
  2. Open the Menu in the top left
  3. Click the "Excel Options" button

  4. Click the advanced tab on the left of the options screen
  5. Under the general options uncheck the box "Ignore other application that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)"

Ignore other applications

Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) was checked because it "fixed" the absurd omission in Excel of an option to open each spreadsheet in a separate window. Now it seems even that hack doesn't work any more.

excel fix!

Thank you so much! that was such an easy fix that i would have never figured out. BTW are you familiar with Outlook? I tried to archive my Outlook files to a file on my computer and now I cannot open Outlook. I get this box that says

"Cannot open your default e-mail folders. File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\Users....\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst"

Can you help?

Thank you
David
