One of the most common questions I hear when talking about implementing a VMware environment is related to backups.  How do you back up a virtual machine? It is possible to use existing methods involving remote agents for backup software, but they are often complicated and expensive, as well as reliant upon tapes.  A better method is to use a Veeam's Backup and Replication product.

NEW Veeam Backup & Replication 4.1 offers a major breakthrough in full and incremental backup speeds. Using technological advancements within VMware vSphere 4 and the VMware vStorage APIs for data protection, Veeam customers experienced the following benefits derived from native support of thin provisioned disks and changed block tracking:

  • Up to 5 times faster for full backups
  • 10+ times faster for incremental backups
  • 80% lower cost for near continuous data protection (CDP) compared with traditional CDP
  • Up to 30 percent lower storage costs
  • Increased reliability by leveraging the latest vStorage technology

We use this product here at InterWorks, and it is FANTASTIC and EASY.  It allows you to create backups of an entire virtual infrastructure, a virtual machine, or selected virtual hard drives on VMs.  From this backup, individual file restores are possible within a matter of minutes.  You can also create full replicas of a VM and store it on another ESX server either at your current location or a DR site.  Send us a message if you are interested in more information!
