How to tether your Blackberry using Desktop Manager (even with AT&T)

1. If you don't already have the latest version of Blackberry Desktop Manager, download it from www.blackberry.com and install it.

2. Open Desktop Manager and wait for it to initialize.

3. Plug in your device. If you see an icon that says IP Modem, you are ready to go. All you have to do is click Configure under Connection Settings and select your carrier. You can then click Connect and you should be connected.

If you have AT&T and do not have a tethering plan, you will not see the IP Modem icon.  You will have to make a few changes to make it appear.  To make it work with AT&T, do the following:

1. Follow steps 1-3 above. After you plug in your device, if you do not see the IP Modem icon, unplug your device and close the Desktop Manager.

2. Locate the file called ip_modem_configuration.xml on your computer. In Windows 7 it will be in C:\ProgramData\Research In Motion\Blackberry, in Windows XP it will be in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Research In Motion\Blackberry. In both cases you must have your computer set to show hidden files and show system files.

3. Open the ip_modem_configuration.xml file with notepad and do a Search for AT&T. When you find that you will see "enabled=false", change false to true and right below that you will see "isp.cingular". Change that to wap.cingular. Close the file and save it, then change the file properties to Read Only.

4. Open Desktop Manager and connect your device. You should now see the IP Modem icon.

5. Click the IP Modem icon and then click Configure.

6. Click Add Custom Profile, name it whatever you want and save it.

7. Under your new custom profile, put the following in the Additional Commands box:     AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

8. Save the profile, click OK, and from now on you should be able to just click Connect and use your AT&T Blackberry to tether.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL INCUR DATA CHARGES WHILE YOU ARE TETHERING.  IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU HAVE AN UNLIMITED DATA PLAN IF YOU ARE GOING TO TETHER.

Works great for me also

I did a lot of digging, and this is the first solution I've found that worked. I have a Bold 9700 with a Win7 laptop. Follow the directions carefully, and (the only point not noted in the instructions) I had to run notepad "as administrator". Thanks for the post!

Tethering

I just wanted to say this is the most easy to follow instruction I came accross. I did everything as instructed on my BB 9000 and was up and tethering within 5 mins, WOW. I almost spent $50 on a program that does tethering...Thanks for the tip, you save me some $$$$$.

Try this:

Try starting the connection from the Network Connections window instead of Desktop Manager.

I get that error on my Storm

I get that error on my Storm 2 as well, but only sometimes. Then I need to do a hard reset by pulling out the battery. Its a bit of a pain because the phone take 5 mins to reboot everytime, but hey at least I can get internet on the go.

Solution to Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem

Check out the following wiki article for a solution to the Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device). https://info.pleasantsolutions.com/Blog/Tethering_a_BlackBerry_to_Telus_...
Although it talks about Telus specifically, the problem and solution occurs for any provider:

out of the blue for no

out of the blue for no apparent reason the desktop manager stopped showing the "IP Modem" icon. I checked the ip_modem_configuration.xml file I had successfully edited and all was per the instructions above. Funny thing is that it worked fine for about one month and then this happened. Anybody have similar experiences?

No apparent reason?

AT&T hacked your computer. Same thing happened to me after I inadvertently left the blackberry hooked up for an hour but I was fortunate enough to get a message saying that my wireless carrier (AT&T)had interrupted tethering (they edited the file on their own). Just go back and edit the XML file again and it will work.
