Professional Golfing: Does Age Matter?

by Tom McCullough
//

With the PGA Championship wrapping up another year of Major Golf Tournaments and the very young Rory McIlroy dominating the field, it occurred to me to ask: “Is winning a major only for the young players?” Also, despite Tiger Woods’ recent back surgery and sudden exit from the Bridgestone Invitational, is Tiger’s age prohibitive to him winning any more majors?

Tableau 8.2 allowed me to take a detailed glance at the championship winners over the last several decades. I found it very interesting that even though the lion’s share of winners are in the magical early 30’s, the overall trend suggests the younger players are taking over. Perhaps this is good news for the future of the sport.

Next, it will be worth finding out how many new, young players are entering the field.

I love how Tableau very quickly opens up the pathway to more questions about our world.
